Cancer Sympathy Card – More Than a Shoulder
This Cancer Sympathy Card is not so much about sympathy, but about support. It reassures that you want to be there through the hard times and show your love.
Writing on the front of the card: “Let me be more than a shoulder.”
Writing on the inside of the card: “I’m here to serve you, to give you everything you need. I can get groceries for you, fundraise for you, take you to the doctor, or just sit on the couch with you to keep you company. I want to be there for you. Please let me know what you need.”
Cancer Sympathy Card Inspiration
I know from personal experience, as a daughter of a two-time breast cancer survivor, and as an oncology nurse, that many times cancer patients don’t want to ask for help. When I asked my mom what I could do to help, she always said, “nothing.” She later admitted, “Sometimes us cancer patients want to be the hero. We don’t want to ask for help, we don’t want to be a burden. But other times, we do want help. We want love and support, but we don’t want to ask for it, we want you to offer, to insist and to keep insisting until we accept.”
I know it’s impossible to read your loved one’s mind, but if they’re going through something as horrible as cancer, don’t wait for them to ask for help. Offer, offer and offer again. Ask them to be specific about what they want. So send this Cancer Sympathy Card, but make sure you follow up with lots of phone calls, visits, and errands for your loved one.
Mark Roby PA-C, cancer survivor, clinician and author of Lifelines to Cancer Survival, told me how important it is to have an inner circle of support. He says that a team of loved ones is crucial to making it through treatment. My conversations with him are what inspired this Cancer Sympathy Card.
Cancer sucks, so fill this card up with your most loving sentiments. And if you have any doubts about how to act or what to say (and what not to say) to your friend with cancer, check out our blog post, 28 Ways to Show You Care.
